He emphasized that the nation's sporting achievements are a reflection of the ongoing support provided to athletes across various disciplines. He specifically congratulated Asmita Dey for securing a gold medal, noting that India's accomplishments on the global stage highlight the advancements being made in Indian sports.
India concluded its remarkable campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026, finishing fourth in the overall medal standings with a total of 39 medals. Asmita Dey triumphed in the women's 48kg judo category, defeating Canada's Heidi Quach in a thrilling golden score match.
"India's current success in sports is largely due to the backing from our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Sports Ministry, and the government, which supports athletes across all sports. From cricket to football, athletics to volleyball, India is excelling. Recently, at the Asian Cadet Championship in Indonesia, a girl athlete won a gold medal for the first time, showcasing the exceptional talent of Indian athletes. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Asmita for her gold medal at the Commonwealth Games," Sen remarked.
India wrapped up the Glasgow Games with a medal haul of 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals from a contingent of 122 athletes. This performance matched the fourth-place finish achieved in Birmingham four years prior, despite a significantly reduced program that excluded several sports where India typically excels. Although the total medal count was lower than the 61 medals won in Birmingham in 2022, it's important to note that 30 of those medals came from sports not included in the Glasgow program. With a smaller team of 122 athletes compared to 210 in the previous Games, India still managed to maintain its fourth-place standing while achieving a better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was notable for winning two medals.
