Horrifying and shocking news has emerged from Sudan’s Darfur region, which is engulfed in violence. According to an independent human rights organization, a horrific drone strike by the Sudanese military directly targeted a civil court in North Darfur state. At least 35 innocent people were killed in this deadly attack, leaving the entire region in mourning and terror. This tragic incident exposes the grave dangers facing civilians and public buildings during Sudan’s ongoing bloody civil war.
According to Emergency Lawyers, an independent group that documents human rights violations and atrocities within Sudan, the horrific attack occurred on Sunday afternoon at the civil court headquarters in the village of Al-Zawiya Gara in North Darfur state. The organization issued a strong official statement, stating that the civilian court in Al-Zawiya Gara was playing a vital judicial and social role in the region. This brutal targeting of civilians and civilian establishments is a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
The human rights group has strongly demanded an impartial, transparent, and prompt international investigation into this horrific attack. However, no official response or statement has yet been issued by the Sudanese military regarding this sensational attack and the serious allegations leveled against it.
Since April 2023, a bloody civil war has been raging in the African country of Sudan between the country’s army and the powerful paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), for power and dominance. According to data from the leading conflict-monitoring group, Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), at least 59,000 people have lost their lives in this horrific conflict. At the same time, numerous international relief agencies and human rights organizations around the world clearly believe that this number of deaths in official figures is significantly understated, and the reality on the ground is far more horrific and devastating.
In Sudan’s bloody civil war, the brazen use of modern drones has become the primary tactic of both sides, the army and the RSF. However, innocent civilians are paying the most horrific and inhumane price for this with their lives. According to a United Nations (UN) report, these drone attacks have become the single largest and most horrific cause of civilian deaths in Sudan. The situation is such that these drone attacks alone accounted for more than 80 percent of all civilian deaths during the first four months of 2026. In a sensitive region like Darfur, the continued targeting of civilian facilities such as schools, hospitals and courts is deepening the fear among local people and the humanitarian crisis is worsening day by day.
