Newcastle United and Arsenal have agreed a £75 million deal for the transfer of Bruno Guimarães.

The Brazil midfielder will now leave Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, in order to undergo a medical with the Gunners.

Both clubs were prepared on Tuesday to get the transfer over the line after Arsenal had an offer rejected by Newcastle on Monday.

Now, however, Arsenal appear to have finally secured their target.

After Newcastle sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for £100 million, the club’s decision-makers had placed a similar valuation on their captain.

But Guimarães’ desire to move, along with the efforts of intermediaries, has brought the fee down.

In addition, Newcastle are expected to receive only around £67 million from the agreed amount because Guimarães’ former club Lyon hold a clause that gives them 20% of the profit.

The expected transfer further boosts Newcastle’s income from player sales this summer, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali having already departed for major fees.

The Magpies will now look to reinvest swiftly and add the experience and quality in midfield that has been lost through this sale.

Incoming manager Matthias Jaissle will certainly require reinforcements in his squad.

Newcastle have already invested heavily in young talent this summer, but they must now add that balance with established quality.

For Arsenal, Guimarães will strengthen an already world-class midfield at the Emirates as the Gunners aim to win the Premier League title again and go back-to-back.
