Manchester United are expected to reinforce the left-back position this summer.

Patrick Dorgu is likely to be used as a left winger by Michael Carrick, and with Dorgu not available as a left-back and Harry Amass still not seen as ready, Luke Shaw does not have a dependable backup in that role.

Because of that, and with the experienced defender unable to play every match unlike last season, signing a left-back has become necessary.

Lewis Hall the dream LB target

According to reports, Carrick’s ideal signing at left-back is Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall.

Even so, a move for Hall was never expected to be straightforward. The highly technical and versatile left-back has impressed hugely in the Premier League, and Newcastle would demand a massive fee for him.

At 21, he is the kind of player who could lock down United’s left side for the next 10 years if they were able to bring him in.

That reality might have been expected to give the 20-time English champions some motivation to push for a deal, but transfer specialist David Ornstein has now delivered a major update.

He said on The Athletic FC podcast: “I do NOT expect Lewis Hall to be coming to Man United. Following the departure of Eddie Howe, Newcastle will be MORE determined to keep him, maybe even tie him down to a new contract.”

That is not the kind of update United supporters would have wanted, and it only adds to their concern.

Even so, although the move currently appears unlikely, United should still test Newcastle’s determination with attractive offers if Hall is truly their preferred option.

The alternatives

At the same time, INEOS will ideally also be working on alternative targets.

Signing a left-back is so important that failing to do so could turn into a transfer mistake, and one that would not fit with Carrick’s plans for next season.
