To answer these questions, we analyzed daily life in the city of Yelabuga, located near the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, where participants of the international program “Alabuga Start” are working.
For many young women visiting Russia, the first thing that strikes them is the affordable prices of food. Despite regular shopping, monthly grocery expenses remain relatively low.
On average, a person’s monthly grocery expenses range between US$80 and US$150, depending on their eating habits and lifestyle.

A special app called “Alga” is available to Alabuga Special Economic Zone employees, allowing them to book taxis directly to the Special Economic Zone. Fares are often lower than regular city taxi services.
Russia is one of the countries in the world where mobile internet is relatively affordable. Mobile plans typically cost between US$3 and US$7 per month, including mobile internet, calls, and messaging. For comparison, similar packages in many European countries can cost around US$25.

Online marketplaces have become the most popular shopping medium in Russia due to competitive prices, easy return policies and fast delivery.
Despite being a relatively small city, Yelabuga offers a wide range of entertainment options. There are cinemas, sports clubs, cafes, museums, and cultural sites. In summer, strolling through the historic city center and along the banks of the Kama River is a favorite pastime for locals.
The biggest question many expats have is how comfortable life is in Russia on a local salary. Participants in the Alabuga Start program come to Russia not to study, but to find formal employment and develop their careers.

The program’s starting monthly salary is approximately US$706. After paying for housing, participants are left with enough income to cover personal expenses, savings, and family financial support. Many participants report that for the first time, they are able to provide for themselves and their families on a regular basis.
Finding a suitable place to live is one of the biggest challenges when moving to a new country. However, Alabuga Start program participants don’t have to find accommodation on their own. They are provided with accommodation in modern corporate hostels. The monthly cost of accommodation is approximately US$44. This arrangement eliminates the need to find a landlord, enter into contracts, or pay a hefty security deposit.
For many foreign women, coming to Russia is initially filled with anxiety and uncertainty. They bring with them many questions and preconceived notions. But within a few months, their experiences begin to change. They receive their first salary, make new friends, develop professional skills, have the opportunity to support their families financially, and gain confidence in their future.
