Farmers are considered the backbone of the nation and the providers of food. Through their hard work, they not only meet their own food requirements but also cater to the food needs of millions of people across the country. Furthermore, farmers play a vital role in the national economy. However, they frequently require funds to meet agricultural needs such as seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation. Often, due to a lack of adequate resources, they are compelled to borrow money from moneylenders at high interest rates, which increases their financial burden.

To address this issue, the government launched the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme. Since 1998, this scheme has been providing farmers with easy and timely access to credit at low interest rates. Despite this, many farmers remain unaware of the full details of this facility and continue to rely unnecessarily on private lenders. Here, we will explore what the Kisan Credit Card is, its benefits, and which farmers are eligible for it.

What is the Kisan Credit Card?
Launched in 1998, the Kisan Credit Card is a government scheme that provides farmers with a revolving credit facility for agriculture-related needs. This means that farmers can withdraw funds as required and repay them after selling their produce.

Possessing this card frees farmers from the hassle of repeatedly applying for loans. The scope of this credit card is not limited to traditional crop production; it now extends to allied activities such as animal husbandry, dairy farming, and fisheries.

What is the interest rate on the Kisan Credit Card?
A significant advantage is the low interest rate. The base interest rate for this credit card is just 7 percent per annum. However, under the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (MISS), the central government offers a 3 percent rebate to farmers who make timely repayments. This brings the effective interest rate down to just 4 percent per annum. Consequently, the Kisan Credit Card offers one of the most affordable borrowing rates available to farmers in the country.

Which farmers are eligible for the Kisan Credit Card?

Farmers of almost all categories are eligible to avail of this benefit.
Farmers who do not own land can also apply through Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) or Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
Moreover, farmers engaged in fish farming can also benefit from this scheme.
There is no age limit for farmers to avail of this credit card; even farmers up to the age of 75 can apply.
