Relationships and love life have become a very sensitive and important part of young people’s lives today. But when expectations are shattered or betrayed, the pain can sometimes prove fatal. Many cases are emerging in cities and cities across the country where, after failing in love, young people choose life-threatening paths like despair, depression, and self-harm. But the question arises: does a person’s departure truly end life? Or should a breakup be viewed as a new lesson, not the end of life?

Analyzing the recent developments and the mindset of the youth, it is clear that while some people get swept away in the whirlpool of emotions after being betrayed in love, on the other hand, today’s modern generation (Gen-Z) is adopting a very practical and sensible way to deal with this situation.

The mental impact of breakups and the rise in depression among young people

The extent to which betrayal can shatter a person can be understood through the cases of young people like Sanjana and Farhan. 23-year-old Sanjana was in a serious relationship with Rohan for several years. She maintained their relationship with complete intensity and honesty. However, Rohan’s intentions and needs were different. After his physical needs were met, Rohan gradually distanced himself from Sanjana and became close to a bold woman named Natasha. When Sanjana, unable to bear seeing her boyfriend with someone else, swallowed a large number of sleeping pills in deep despair. Her life was saved only by the prompt intervention of family members and doctors.

A similar case occurred with 20-year-old Farhan, who was deeply in love with his classmate, Nazia. When Nazia began ignoring Farhan for her childhood friend, Iqbal, Farhan fell into a deep depression and considered suicide. Fortunately, a friend arrived at the scene and saved his life. Both these incidents demonstrate that when emotions take over in love and proper guidance is lacking, young people do not hesitate to risk their precious lives.

It is important to understand the difference between emotional attachment and lust.

According to psychologists and relationship experts, it’s a very natural feeling to feel deeply connected to someone. When a man and a woman truly love each other, they often feel incomplete without each other. However, in today’s world, it’s crucial to understand the difference between love and “physical hunger” (lust).

It’s often seen that some people pretend to be very nice at the beginning of a relationship. They pretend to be emotionally and mentally close to their partner, but their true motive is simply to satisfy their physical needs. Once their needs are met, they begin to ignore their partner or distance themselves by making excuses. In such a situation, the betrayed person needs to understand that the fault was not theirs, but the betrayer’s. It’s not wise to risk their precious life because of a selfish person.

‘If not you, someone else is right’: The practical approach of today’s Gen-Z

While in the past, people would wallow in grief for years after a breakup, today’s young generation (Gen-Z) has become much more practical about relationships. Today’s youth are positively embracing the “if not you, then someone else” formula. This doesn’t mean they don’t value relationships, but rather they understand that their entire life shouldn’t be wasted on the wrong person.

The story of 19-year-old college student Alka highlights this very mindset of today’s youth. Alka explains that she has lived in a live-in relationship with a boyfriend. Initially, she loved him immensely and dreamed of spending her entire life with him. But when, after living together, she realized that he was unworthy of being her life partner, instead of crying and complaining, she separated herself from the relationship in time. Alka believes that a few meetings alone don’t reveal a person’s true character. Only when you spend time with someone do you truly understand their strengths and weaknesses.

How to handle yourself after a breakup: Experts’ opinion

If you or someone you know is going through a breakup or betrayal, life coaches and mentors recommend paying attention to the following:

  • Give yourself time and avoid haste: It’s not right to assume someone is your everything or make marriage decisions on your first or second date. Take the time to understand the other person mentally and emotionally.
  • Self-Love: A breakup isn’t the end of life. When someone leaves your life, consider it God’s saving you from the wrong person. Focus your energy on your career, hobbies, and family.
  • Be emotionally mature: Do not blindly trust the person until your mind and intellect completely accept that the person in front of you is perfect and trustworthy for you.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help: If you’re experiencing extreme depression or negative thoughts after a breakup, talk to your parents, close friends, or a mental health expert immediately.
