Afghanistan have secured direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup after beating Ireland by three wickets in Belfast. The result has also ended West Indies’ hopes of reaching the tournament directly through the ICC ODI Rankings.
Afghanistan’s latest win means they are now mathematically safe in the direct qualification race ahead of the September 30 cut-off. West Indies, on the other hand, will have to take the Qualifier route to book their place in the 2027 World Cup.
For a team that won the first two editions of the ODI World Cup, it is another disappointing chapter in West Indies’ recent history in the 50-over format.
Afghanistan confirmed their position with a three-wicket win over Ireland in Belfast.
Rashid Khan once again played an important role for his team. The Afghanistan star picked up 3 for 44 with the ball before scoring an unbeaten 37 in the chase.
The result was bigger than just another bilateral ODI victory. It effectively secured Afghanistan’s direct entry into the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Afghanistan have been one of the most improved ODI teams over the last few years. Their performances at the 2023 ODI World Cup were already a clear indication of their progress, and direct qualification for the next edition is another positive step for the team.
The qualification system is important to understand here.
The 2027 ODI World Cup will feature 14 teams, with South Africa and Zimbabwe automatically qualifying as Full Member hosts. Namibia will also co-host the tournament but does not receive automatic qualification.
Apart from South Africa and Zimbabwe, the eight highest-ranked eligible teams in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings on September 30, 2026 will qualify directly for the World Cup.
That gives the tournament ten teams through host qualification and the ODI rankings. The remaining four places will come through the qualification pathway.
This is why West Indies being 10th in the overall ODI rankings does not simply mean that the “top 10” qualify. Zimbabwe’s host qualification has to be taken into account while calculating the eight ranking-based spots.
West Indies currently find themselves outside the eight ranking-based qualification positions.
Their remaining opportunity before the September 30 cut-off comes against India. West Indies are scheduled to play the first two matches of their three-match ODI series against India on September 27 and September 30.
The third ODI will be played on October 3, which is after the World Cup qualification cut-off and therefore cannot help their direct qualification chances.
More importantly, Afghanistan’s win over Ireland has now closed the door for West Indies.
Even if West Indies beat India in both ODIs scheduled before the September 30 deadline, they cannot beat Afghanistan in ranking.
It means there is no longer a mathematical route for West Indies to reach the 2027 World Cup directly through the rankings.
The only route left for West Indies is now the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier.
The Qualifier is set to feature ten teams, with the top four teams progressing to the World Cup. West Indies will therefore have another opportunity, but the road is certainly more difficult than direct qualification.
This will also be the third successive ODI World Cup cycle in which West Indies have needed to go through the Qualifier route.
They successfully came through the qualifying tournament for the 2019 World Cup. However, the situation became much worse ahead of the 2023 edition, when the two-time champions failed to qualify for the World Cup altogether.
That history will make the 2027 Qualifier even more important for them.
For Afghanistan, the situation is completely different.
They are no longer a team simply looking to compete against the bigger cricketing nations. Their ODI side now has enough quality and experience to regularly challenge strong teams.
Their 2023 World Cup campaign was an important example. Afghanistan defeated England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and came very close to another famous victory against Australia.
Players such as Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran and several others have given the side a strong core in ODI cricket.
Securing direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup is another reward for that consistency.
