Nowadays, everyone receives calls from unknown 10-digit numbers. The caller often claims to be a delivery person from a courier company, a bank official, or an employee of a gas agency. In such situations, it becomes extremely difficult for the average person to determine whether the call is genuinely from a legitimate company or if a fraudster is attempting to scam them. To permanently eliminate this fear and inconvenience for customers, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken a significant and effective step.
**What is TRAI’s 1601 Number Series?**
TRAI has directed the implementation of special numbers starting with the '1601' series for courier, logistics, and utility (electricity, water, gas) services. This new series, allocated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is being rolled out in a phased manner. Its primary objective is to ensure that all essential service and transactional calls received by customers carry a clear and trustworthy identity.
**Why was the 1601 Number Series introduced?**
You may recall that TRAI had previously issued the '1600' series for banking, financial services, insurance, and government departments. Since calls related to banks and the government are highly sensitive and directly linked to financial security, TRAI decided to keep other everyday services—such as courier deliveries or gas bookings—separate from that category. The 1601 series was introduced specifically to prevent confusion and to distinguish critical financial calls from routine service calls.
**Protection Against Fraudulent Calls**
A key feature of this new rule is that numbers in the 1601 series will be allocated directly to eligible companies. There will be no role for intermediaries or aggregators in this allocation process; telecom service providers will issue these numbers to companies only after conducting thorough verification. TRAI believes this move will deal a direct blow to fraudsters who deceive the general public by using standard 10-digit mobile numbers. Having a distinct numbering identity will also boost consumer trust in these companies.
For which services will this number appear?
TRAI has clarified that, following consultations with stakeholders, this facility is being extended to two key sectors in the first phase:
Utilities: This includes electricity distribution companies, water boards, city gas distribution companies, and LPG supply agencies.
Logistics and Courier: This covers parcel delivery courier companies, express logistics providers, and freight/cargo transport services.
90-day ultimatum for telecom companies
TRAI has issued strict instructions to all telecom operators in the country to complete the verification of eligible companies and migrate them to the new '1601' series within 90 days of the order's issuance.
Additionally, telecom companies have been directed to ensure that the '1601' series is used exclusively for 'service and transactional' voice calls (calls conveying essential information). TRAI has explicitly warned that no company will be permitted to use these numbers for advertising or marketing calls.
