Fulham have finalised the signing of Northern Ireland international midfielder Shea Charles from Southampton in a deal worth up to £30m. The 22-year-old has put pen to a five-year contract at Craven Cottage, becoming the most expensive player in Northern Ireland's history and giving the squad an added boost ahead of the new Premier League season.

Fulham have now officially wrapped up the transfer of 22-year-old midfielder Charles in an agreement valued at up to £30m, made up of an initial £26m fee and a further £4m in performance-related add-ons. That amount surpasses the previous national record set by Jamal Lewis, who joined Newcastle United from Norwich City for £15m in 2020. As a result, Charles is now the most expensive Northern Ireland footballer ever after signing his five-year deal at Craven Cottage. The former Manchester City academy graduate opted for a switch to west London instead of joining Leeds United, with Fulham bringing him in to replace Sasa Lukic after his move to Ipswich Town.

Charles expresses immense privilege

The young midfielder spoke of his happiness at completing the move to west London after holding discussions with the coaching staff about the club's long-term plans.

In his first interview on the club's official website, Charles explained how proud he felt after completing the transfer: "I'm buzzing to finally get it over the line. The club has got a really good foundation, from the bottom to the top really.

"It's a great club, with a really good vision – the manager explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege. I hope to really kickstart my Premier League career. At such a good club as well, it's perfect for me, and hopefully perfect for the fans as well."

Arbeloa shapes new squad

Charles is Fulham's third signing under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa, who took over from Marco Silva after Silva left for Benfica. The Northern Ireland international is now the third most expensive signing in Fulham's history, behind only Gonzalo Garcia and Kevin, both of whom joined for around £34m. Arbeloa is continuing to reshape the Cottagers' squad during the summer transfer window, having added Real Madrid duo Garcia and Cesar Palacios along with Charles as he looks to build a side capable of competing strongly over the long term.

Pre-season testing precedes opener

Fulham head to Spain to face Malaga on Wednesday before coming back home to host German club Stuttgart on Saturday, August 15. The pre-season programme gives Arbeloa an important chance to fine-tune his tactical approach and work his new signings into the starting XI. Their first big test then arrives in their Premier League opener against London rivals Chelsea on Monday, August 24.
