After picking up an injury on Monday, FC Barcelona have now issued a clear medical update on Roony Bardghji, and the news is far from encouraging.

As anticipated, the Swedish winger has sustained a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee and is due to undergo surgery in the next few days.

“Roony Bardghji has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He will undergo surgery in the coming days,” the club said in its official statement.

Bardghji suffered the injury during a training session on Monday. He was seen leaving the pitch in tears afterwards, immediately causing concern within Barcelona.

The Sweden international had been expected to leave the club in the coming days after slipping down the pecking order under Hansi Flick.

However, the ACL injury and the operation that will follow mean Bardghji is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, effectively ending any chance of a move this summer and likely ruling out a January departure as well.

It is a major setback for the young forward, especially after he had made a positive impression in the minutes he was given during pre-season.

A more precise timeline for his recovery should become clear after the surgery, but with an injury of this kind, Bardghji is expected to be out for at least six to seven months.

Meanwhile, in a move aimed at preventing injuries to other players who could still leave the club, Barcelona have decided to place as many as six footballers on individual training programmes starting today.
