The Atlas is a key model for Volkswagen, a mid-size crossover positioned near the top of the brand’s line-up in the American market. The newest generation was introduced in March, but it was notably shown only in its three-row form. However, VW has not overlooked customers who preferred the more streamlined, two-row Atlas Cross Sport sold since 2020, and on Monday the company revealed the second-generation version of that model.
Like the earlier Atlas, the Cross Sport in this generation is defined largely by what it leaves out. It is a five-seat model, removing the third row from the regular Atlas in favour of a more sharply sloping roofline. The end result is a vehicle that looks more stylish and far more distinctive, though that trade-off in practicality means it will mainly appeal to buyers who do not expect to need a third row any time soon. That clearly has not been a problem for many Atlas customers, as VW says 220,000 Atlas Cross Sports have been sold since the model first arrived in 2020.
Its dimensions are slightly sportier as well, being 5.4 inches shorter overall at 195.6 inches and sitting 2.1 inches lower to the ground. Beyond that, most of the updates are focused on styling and differ depending on the trim level, although shorter overhangs and a more flush tailgate design give every Cross Sport variant a clearly recognisable look.
In most other respects, this remains an Atlas. Considering the success Volkswagen has enjoyed with its mid-size SUV in both body styles over the past five years, that should be encouraging news for buyers in the US. Pricing and additional details will be announced closer to its market launch in early 2027.
