New rules will come into force on this day

Under these rules, which will be implemented from February 1, 2027, creators applying to participate in the Partner Program must have 8,000 eligible watch hours in the past year or 20 million (2 crore) views of eligible shorts in the past 90 days. The tech company has made it clear that there has been no change to entry limits for its fan funding and shopping products.

Currently, eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program requires having subscribers and 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million (1 crore) shorts views in the last 90 days. YouTube says the change is being made to keep up with the growth of YouTube, which now records more than 200 billion (20,000 crore) shorts views every day and more than 1 billion hours of watch time on TV every day.

Shorts revenue sharing method has been updated

Additionally, YouTube has also updated the way shorts revenue is shared with creators. YouTube will now make it mandatory for creators to have 1 crore (10 million) eligible views of 'shorts' in the last 90 days to be eligible to receive a share of ad and subscription revenue. Creators who do not reach this limit will also be part of the YouTube Partner Program and will be eligible to earn revenue for long form content. This new rule will also be implemented from February 1, 2027.

YouTube Premium Lite Plan
