Leeds United played out a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Croke Park in Dublin before going down 5-4 in the penalty shootout in the Boyle Sports Cup.

Lee Sobot’s player ratings underlined an impressive debut from goalkeeper James Trafford.

Manchester United went ahead in the 16th minute when Bryan Mbeumo got away from Jaka Bijol on the left and squared the ball for Joshua Zirkzee, who finished past Trafford.

Leeds drew level in the 29th minute as Trafford’s quick clearance picked out Lukas Nmecha, after which Dan James cut out the move and slipped Brenden Aaronson through to score.

Daniel Farke made 10 substitutions at half-time. Leeds looked dangerous early in the second half, but the contest then settled before Manchester United won the shootout to claim the trophy.

Trafford was awarded eight following a number of first-half saves and crisp distribution, with his alert clearance helping to create the equaliser. Sobot’s view was that it was probably a seven, but because the goalkeeper had only signed on Thursday, the rating was raised to eight.

Jayden Bogle received six, having looked lively going forward but vulnerable at times. Bijol was given five after being beaten in the move for the goal, although he improved afterwards and captained the side. Sebastiaan Bornauw got six, having been caught too high for the opener before improving, and he was the only player to remain on the pitch throughout. Tarik Muharemovic earned seven as Leeds’ best centre-back before the interval. Youngster Rhys Chadwick took six at left wing-back, defending well against Amad and showing encouraging signs.
