The Scottish FA is moving closer to appointing a new head coach to take the national team into a new phase after Steve Clarke's departure. Former West Bromwich Albion defender Sebastien Pocognoli has now emerged as the frontrunner to take charge at Hampden Park.

Pocognoli emerges as leading candidate

Scotland seem to have found the man they want to lead the national side after the end of the Clarke era, which concluded with their group-stage exit at this summer's World Cup. According to Sky Sports, former Premier League defender Pocognoli has become the standout favourite for the vacant manager's role, with the Scottish FA marking the 39-year-old out as their main choice to rejuvenate the squad.

The potential appointment would signal a notable change in approach from the SFA, with the governing body turning towards a younger coach who offers a modern tactical outlook. Pocognoli is currently without a club, which makes him an appealing and readily available option as they aim to complete the process swiftly.

Coaching pedigree and recent success

Although he is still comparatively young as a coach, Pocognoli brings a background that has clearly impressed the key figures in Glasgow. He enjoyed an outstanding spell in his native Belgium, where he notably led Union Saint-Gilloise to their first Belgian league title in 90 years last year. That success greatly enhanced his reputation across Europe and underlined his capacity to build an organised side and deliver steady results at the highest level of domestic football.

After that achievement in Belgium, Pocognoli moved to Ligue 1 and took over at Monaco last October. While his spell in the principality came to an end this summer after the club finished seventh in Ligue 1, his experience of managing one of France's most prominent clubs is regarded as a significant plus. The SFA believes his exposure to top-level European football, along with his ability to handle high-profile players, would serve him well in the international game.

A familiar face in British football

For followers of British football, Pocognoli is a recognisable name because of his playing days in the Premier League and the Championship. The former left-back turned out for West Bromwich Albion, where he picked up valuable experience of the physical and mental demands that come with life in England's top division.

Alongside his permanent time at West Brom, the Belgian international also spent a season on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion a decade ago. That familiarity with the British football environment, added to his more recent tactical achievements in Europe, makes him a distinctive candidate who combines local understanding with modern continental coaching ideas.

Transitioning from the Clarke era

During his playing career, Pocognoli made more than 300 domestic appearances and won 13 caps for Belgium. His expected appointment would also carry historical significance, with the 39-year-old set to become Scotland's first foreign head coach since Berti Vogts occupied the role between 2002 and 2004.

Looking forward, the Belgian coach would arrive with a clear brief from the Scottish FA to begin a new chapter for the national team. His main task will be to rebuild Scotland's competitive momentum and lead them through successive qualification pushes for major tournaments, with the targets being a place at the 2028 European Championship and then the 2030 World Cup.
