On Saturday, FC Bayern faced RB Leipzig in the Telekom Cup at the Allianz Arena. For both sides, the match served as a proper measure of where they stand after their pre-season preparations so far.

Bayern were aiming to move another step forward after their narrow wins over Jeju SK and Aston Villa in their previous outings. Since then, the situation has developed further: the players who returned from the World Cup have increasingly found their rhythm, while players such as Ismael Saibari and Jamal Musiala have also been back in team training.

Both of them were included in the squad for the first time, along with Alphonso Davies. Missing out were Michael Olise, Harry Kane, Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry, Lennart Karl and Joao Palhinha.

The game in Munich began in lively fashion. After two minutes, a shot from Gomis forced Manuel Neuer into his first save, though it did not trouble the goalkeeper too much. Bayern needed a few minutes to settle, but then started to look more dangerous. There was also an early setback, as Konrad Laimer had to go off injured.

FC Bayern went ahead after 12 minutes. Following a dribble by Binder, the ball reached Luis Diaz, who reacted quickly and drove his effort straight into the far corner. Binder had already made a bright impression by then, playing with confidence and repeatedly taking on defenders in one-on-one situations.

Leipzig continued to switch the play quickly, but Bayern defended with discipline. In the 40th minute, RB created their first real opening. After an accurate cross from Ridle Baku, a header from Banzuzi went just wide of the far post.

Shortly before the break, a shot from Sacha Boey, who had replaced Laimer, was diverted behind for a corner. Soon after that, the referee brought the first half to an end with Bayern 1–0 up, a lead they fully deserved.

Right after half-time, Leipzig produced their strongest phase of the match as Bayern became slightly more passive. Johan Bakayoko, who had only just come on, tested Manuel Neuer twice and also struck the post once. Leipzig made Bayern pay for that dip and levelled at 1–1 through Brajan Gruda. His bouncing volley flew into the far corner in the 52nd minute, giving Neuer no chance.

Bayern took a little time to respond, but the answer arrived in the form of another goal. Nathaniel Brown was played through brilliantly and kept his composure in front of goal to make it 2–1. That restored Bayern’s belief, and the momentum swung back their way, even if the contest was more evenly balanced than it had been in the first half.

Late in the second half, Minjae Kim was also forced off with an injury, and Vincent Kompany used that moment to make several changes at once. Ismael Saibari made his Bayern debut, while youngsters Wisdom Mike and Maycon Cardozo were also introduced. Cardozo made an immediate impact, taking on his man and getting away a shot from a tight angle.

Soon afterwards, Bayern extended their lead to 3–1. Saibari played his part with a dribble, and Musiala applied the finish. His deflected effort ended up in the right corner of the net. Not long after that, however, Musiala also had to be taken off and looked clearly dazed. An emergency medical team briefly came onto the pitch, but the Bayern star was able to walk off under his own power. Nothing further of note happened after that, and the match finished 3–1 in favour of FCB.
