A total of 408 new seats have been proposed across MBBS, PG, DNB, and fellowship levels in Delhi’s government medical institutions. The objective of this expansion is to address the shortage of doctors and specialists in government hospitals.
Delhi Medical Seats: The government has prepared a roadmap to expand medical education capacity in Delhi. Under this initiative, 408 new seats have been proposed across MBBS, postgraduate, DNB, and fellowship levels in the capital’s government medical institutions. The aim is to alleviate the shortage of doctors and specialists in government hospitals and increase the number of trained medical professionals for Delhi’s healthcare infrastructure. The government plans to work on three levels to expand medical education: increasing seats through new medical colleges, expanding the capacity of existing institutions, and promoting postgraduate and advanced medical programs.
300 Seats to be Added Across Two Medical Colleges
Under the ‘Greenfield’ model, 150 seats each have been proposed for Indira Gandhi Hospital (Dwarka) and the medical college currently under construction at Guru Gobind Singh Hospital. Once these seats become operational, a total of 300 new undergraduate medical seats will be added. Meanwhile, there is a plan for ‘Brownfield’ expansion to increase seats in existing medical institutions. Under this plan, it is proposed to increase the number of MBBS seats at Dr. B.S.A. Medical College and Hospital from 125 to 200, resulting in an addition of 75 seats. There is also a proposal to increase the number of BDS seats at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences; the BDS seats there will be raised from 50 to 70.
Expansion of PG Seats as Well
The Delhi government also plans to increase seats at the postgraduate level. A proposal has been made to increase the number of PG seats at Maulana Azad Medical College from 260 to 295, which will add 35 new seats. There is a plan to increase the number of PG seats at MAIDS from 22 to 42. Additionally, a proposal has been made to launch new PG courses with 24 new PG seats at Dr. B.S.A. Medical College. Under the government’s roadmap, a total of 103 new PG and DNB seats have been proposed across various government medical institutions in Delhi; this includes 67 MD/MS seats and 36 DNB seats.
Proposed New PG and DNB Seats Across Institutions
The proposal for 103 new PG-DNB seats includes 24 MD/MS seats at Dr. B.S.A. Medical College, 35 MD/MS seats at MAMC, and 18 DNB seats at IGMC. Furthermore, proposals include 8 DNB seats at Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, 2 DNB seats at GTB Hospital, 4 MD/MS seats at UCMS & GTB Hospital, 2 DNB seats at Guru Gobind Singh Government Hospital, 4 DNB seats at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, 2 DNB seats at Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, and 4 MD seats at the Delhi State Cancer Institute. Additionally, 3 fellowship seats at GTB Hospital and 2 at the Delhi State Cancer Institute have been proposed. Thus, a total of 108 new advanced medical seats are proposed across PG, DNB, and fellowship levels.
Focus on DM/MCh and Super-Specialty Programs
The Delhi government’s plan is not limited merely to increasing MBBS and PG seats. It also aims to expand super-specialty programs—such as DM and MCh—and structured post-doctoral fellowship courses. The process of obtaining necessary approvals from the relevant competent authorities, including the National Medical Commission, is currently underway to implement these proposed seats and programs.
