A consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has in fact acquired a 38 per cent stake in Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group.
1892 Holdings, the group headed by Amit Bhatia and also featuring Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, had been believed to have purchased between 30 per cent and one-third of the club.
The share purchase, worth more than £1.5bn, came with Liverpool being valued at over £5bn.
The agreement also contains a framework for possible future investment by 1892, although neither the group nor FSG is bound to proceed with it.
Bezos, whose estimated wealth stands at $270bn, is among the richest people in the world, while Saverin and Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, who is Bhatia’s father-in-law, are both also reported to be worth more than $30bn.
Bhatia is set to become Liverpool’s vice-chairman, while Elaine Saverin, wife of Eduardo, and Brian Baum of K5 Sports, Bezos’s fund, are joining as directors.
FSG, which bought Liverpool for £300m in 2010, will keep operational control of the club. Bezos’s involvement will not change Liverpool’s transfer budget or transfer policy.
