Paul Scholes, the Manchester United legend, urged Chelsea to make a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez while speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast. Scholes said,

‘I think the goalkeeper is still a problem for Chelsea.

‘If I was them, I would have a look at the Aston Villa goalkeeper because his move to Juventus has just fallen through. I think he would be a good signing for Chelsea.’

Martinez was in good form for the West Midlands side, producing a series of impressive performances for them in the Premier League. The 33-year-old let in 49 goals and registered 14 clean sheets in 44 appearances for Aston Villa last season across all competitions.

The Argentine is currently one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the Premier League. Therefore, the Blues would do well to try and complete a deal for him in this off-season.

At present, his contract with the Midlands club is set to expire in the summer of 2029, which could make it tough for Chelsea to sign him for a bargain fee this month.

Martinez can be a dependable presence between the posts when he is full of confidence on the pitch. He is excellent with his sharp reflexes and can pull off a number of important saves at the back for his side.

At 1.95m tall, the Argentine goalkeeper can also use his powerful frame to command his penalty area when dealing with the opposition’s set-pieces. Martinez has plenty of Premier League experience and should not need much time to settle in at Chelsea if they choose to sign him in this transfer window.

The Argentine would add more quality to Xabi Alonso’s defensive unit. He would represent an upgrade on Robert Sanchez at the West London club and is more than capable of securing a regular first-team place at Stamford Bridge over the coming seasons.

At 33, Martinez could still have a few strong years left at the top level. Hence, Alonso should take Scholes’s advice and try to bring the Argentina international to the club this summer.
