Weather Update 21 August 2026: The monsoon remains active across several parts of India, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in multiple regions. Reports based on the latest weather warnings indicate that rain and thunderstorms could affect a large number of states, while parts of the Western Himalayas also remain vulnerable to landslides and weather- disruptions.

Heavy Rain Expected in Several Regions

The current weather pattern is being influenced by active monsoon conditions and a well-marked low-pressure system over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas. IMD has specifically warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of eastern Madhya Pradesh on August 20 and 21.

Rain activity is also expected across parts of northern, central and eastern India. Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal are among the areas where heavy to very heavy rainfall is a particular concern.

Delhi-NCR: What Is the Forecast?

Delhi-NCR is expected to remain cloudy with chances of rain. However, the latest IMD subdivision warning available on August 21 lists no specific warning for Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on August 21, while a heavy-rain warning is indicated for August 22.

So, residents should not assume that every rain- headline means a severe warning has been issued for Delhi itself.

Landslide Risk in Mountain Areas

The risk is more significant in vulnerable mountainous areas. Heavy rainfall in the Western Himalayan region, including parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, can destabilise slopes and increase the possibility of landslides, falling rocks and road disruptions. IMD’s current warning information includes heavy rainfall potential over the Western Himalayan region.

People travelling to hill stations should therefore check local administration and road-condition updates before beginning their journey.

What Should You Do?

During periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged roads.
  • Do not attempt to cross flooded streams or swollen rivers.
  • Stay away from exposed areas during lightning and thunderstorms.
  • In hilly regions, avoid stopping near unstable slopes or landslide-prone roads.
  • Keep checking official weather and local administration alerts.
  • Drivers should be particularly careful where visibility is poor.

Bottom Line

The August 21 weather situation is active across several parts of India, but the intensity and warning level vary significantly from state to state and district to district. The widely circulated claim of alerts across 27 states should therefore be understood as a broad weather-risk summary rather than a uniform warning for every part of those states.

For the most accurate information, residents should follow the latest IMD district-level warnings, particularly if they live in flood-prone or mountainous areas.
