IND vs SL Live: Saransh Jain made his India Test debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday and immediately entered the record books. The 33-year-old all-rounder became India's oldest Test debutant in the 21st century, surpassing former wicketkeeper Saba Karim's record from 2000. Jain made his debut at 33 years and 145 days, beating Karim, who was 32 years and 362 days old when he played his first Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

Saransh Jain Becomes India's Oldest Test Debutant This Century

Jain received his India Test cap ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka, with Ravindra Jadeja presenting it to him.

He became the 320th men's Test cricketer to represent India and the oldest Indian player to make his Test debut in the 21st century.

Jain's debut also marked another milestone for his hometown. He became the fifth cricketer from Indore to play Test cricket for India, following Narendra Hirwani, Rajesh Chauhan, Naman Ojha and Rajat Patidar.

He is also the oldest Indian to play Test cricket after turning 33 since Robin Singh made his debut in 1998.

From India A Success To Test Debut

Jain's opportunity came after Washington Sundar suffered a hamstring injury during India's ODI tour of England, opening a place in the Test squad for the Sri Lanka series.

The Madhya Pradesh all-rounder has built a strong reputation in domestic cricket. In 54 first-class matches, he has scored 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75 and taken 188 wickets at 27.30.

His performances for India A in Sri Lanka earlier this year further strengthened his case. Jain scored an unbeaten 70 and also claimed six wickets during the tour.

His Test debut also makes him India's first off-spinner to play his maiden Test since Washington Sundar in January 2021.

Saransh Jain's Unusual IPL Journey

Despite his impressive record in first-class cricket, Jain has never been picked by an IPL franchise.

He entered the IPL auctions in 2024, 2025 and 2026 but failed to attract a bid. He was also among the final shortlisted players at last year's auction but remained unsold.

Now, after years of domestic cricket and repeated setbacks at the IPL auction, Jain has earned the biggest opportunity of his career with India.

At 33, his Test debut represents a long-awaited reward for a player who spent years building his case away from the spotlight.
