The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Sunday accused the Centre of reneging on assurances made to end the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar, alleging that the government was attempting to weaken commitments made to India’s youth. In a statement, the group said the government had made promises while bringing the peaceful demonstration to an end, but was now trying to backtrack once the protesters had cleared the streets.
“The promises made to the youth of India must be implemented in letter and spirit,” the CJP said.
The group alleged that, despite repeated appeals before the court to withdraw FIRs registered during the student protests, the government had not yet submitted the required list.
The CJP said the Centre had ended the agitation following an assurance linked to a joint press conference, but claimed that subsequent delays, dilution or reinterpretation of those commitments would amount to an “unacceptable breach of trust” and a betrayal of the country’s youth.
In a press conference shortly after its statement, the group alleged that the government appeared to be attempting to “betray” the younger generation.
The CJP said any attempt to delay, dilute, misinterpret or disregard the assurances would be viewed as a serious violation of the understanding reached to withdraw the protest.
The group also issued a fresh warning of possible action, saying its next course would be discussed at a meeting on August 24.
It urged students, young citizens, supporters and CJP workers across the country to remain prepared for developments following the meeting, indicating that another movement could be announced.
The CJP also claimed that the Jantar Mantar protests had led to Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, but said it would continue its campaign until the commitments made to young people were fulfilled.
“We will not sit quietly until the promises made to the youth are fulfilled,” the group said.
