Modi government Onion Price Plan: Onion, which is used daily in the kitchen, is now becoming a burden on the pockets of common people. There has been a sharp rise in onion prices in the last few weeks. Its price has reached Rs 60-65 per kg in the retail market of many cities.

In such a situation, the biggest question amid rising prices is whether onion will become more expensive in the coming days or will the government’s steps provide relief? The Central Government has clarified the situation regarding the availability of onion, the reason for the price increase and the steps being taken to control the price.

There is no shortage of onion in the country – Central Government

According to the Central Government, the availability of onion in the country is complete and there is enough stock to meet the domestic requirement in the coming months. The estimated production of onion in the financial year 2025-26 is expected to be around 307.37 lakh tonnes (LMT). Last year this figure was around 307.67 LMT. That means there has not been a big decline in production. The government says that the current situation should not be seen as an actual shortage of onion.

Why does onion price increase in August-September?

According to the government, seasonal increase in onion prices is generally seen during August and September. During this period, festive demand, weather conditions and supply chain circumstances affect the prices. For this reason, fluctuations can be seen in the price of onion from mandis to retail market during this time.

What is the government’s plan to control onion prices?

The government has taken steps to control the continuously rising onion prices, the complete plan has been shared in a statement. The government says that controlled supply is being released from the buffer stock of onion so that unnecessary fluctuations in prices can be prevented.

Apart from this, transportation and release of onion will start from Nashik on Monday (24th August). The first phase includes Chennai, Madurai, Delhi, Kochi and Guwahati. So far in 2025-26, about 88,000 metric tonnes of onion has been transported to 16 big cities in 86 railway rakes through ‘Kanda Express’. More cities will be added as per need.
