According to RBI data, ₹2.08 lakh crore was spent via credit cards in July 2026. This figure exceeds the ₹2.01 lakh crore spent in June and the ₹1.93 lakh crore spent in July 2025.

Credit Card Spending News: If you use a credit card for shopping, online payments, or other needs, these figures from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) might surprise you. Credit card spending across the country is consistently rising. In July 2026, total spending via credit cards stood at approximately ₹2.08 lakh crore, a significant increase compared to July of the previous year.

Moreover, this marks the third consecutive month where card spending has crossed the ₹2 lakh crore mark. These figures clearly indicate that people are increasingly using credit cards for payments and shopping. Let’s take a look at which banks' cards saw the highest spending.

How much has credit card spending increased?

Between January and December 2025, the average monthly spending via credit cards was around ₹1.93 lakh crore.
From January to July 2026, the average monthly spending rose to approximately ₹2 lakh crore.
By July 2026, the total number of credit cards in the country reached approximately 12.29 crore.
In June 2026, this figure stood at around 12.16 crore.
In July 2025, there were approximately 11.16 crore credit cards in the country.
In other words, over the course of a year, there has been an increase in both credit card spending and the total number of cards.

Which bank's cards saw the highest spending?

According to RBI data, large private sector banks have led the way in terms of credit card spending. HDFC Bank: Spending via its cards stood at approximately ₹60,217.54 crore in July, marking an 11.93% increase compared to the previous year.
ICICI Bank: Card spending for this bank declined by 5.9% year-on-year, settling at around ₹34,025.27 crore.
Axis Bank: Spending via its credit cards amounted to approximately ₹23,824.7 crore, recording a year-on-year rise of 4.6%.
SBI Cards: Spending in July stood at around ₹39,591.76 crore, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 21.6%.
By July, the total credit card spending by public sector banks had reached approximately ₹46,000 crore.

Could credit card spending rise further?

According to experts, monthly credit card spending exceeding ₹2 lakh crore across the country could now become the norm. Spending is expected to rise further, particularly as the festive season approaches in the coming months. Consequently, an increase in card usage for shopping, travel, and other needs is likely to drive a surge in total expenditure.
