Spurs looked to gather momentum with an encouraging display in the cup.

Tottenham’s new signing Savio marked his debut with a goal in an eye-catching cameo as Spurs powered to a 5-1 win over Charlton in the Carabao Cup.

Spurs wrapped up the £85 million signing of Savio from Manchester City on Tuesday, ending a long-running pursuit on a positive note, and the 22-year-old wasted little time in endearing himself to the home supporters.

Savio came on in the 71st minute and opened his account for his new club in the 82nd minute with a crisp low finish into the bottom corner.

The Brazil forward sped away thinking he had a second goal three minutes later, but Ben Davies was ultimately credited with Tottenham’s fifth after getting the decisive final touch.

It was a badly needed uplifting evening for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, who had been beaten 3-0 by Brentford on the opening day of the season, but responded here with goals from Mikey Moore, Dominic Solanke and Kevin Danso as well to secure a place in the third round.

De Zerbi had said he would treat the Carabao Cup seriously and made only five changes, in contrast to Nathan Jones, who heavily rotated his side but was then forced into making a double substitution after only 15 minutes.

Charlton defender Collins Sichenje was carried off on a stretcher with what looked like a potentially serious knee injury, while Billy Koumetio also went off limping, contributing to a disrupted opening spell.

Spurs gradually began to test the visitors, with Archie Gray’s curling effort pushed wide by Tiernan Brooks before Moore broke the deadlock in the 41st minute.

Academy product Moore drove infield and smashed a left-footed effort in off the crossbar to score Tottenham’s first goal of the new season.

It soon became 2-0 when Solanke blasted home after Charlton failed to clear a corner, before Moore opened the second half with a dazzling run through the defence.

Danso made it three with his first touch, heading in Mateus Fernandes’ free-kick in the 67th minute, before attention turned to Savio.

After producing a couple of lively runs, the winger cut inside and fired into the corner in the 82nd minute to score only his eighth goal in English football.

That triggered huge celebrations in front of Spurs’ single-tier South Stand and prompted a new chant for the Brazilian, who then celebrated again when he twisted and turned inside the box before his side-footed effort took a deflection off Davies.

Davies was later awarded the goal, while Lloyd Jones headed in a strong back-post effort for Charlton’s consolation, but the evening unquestionably belonged to Savio.
