INEOS decided to overhaul Manchester United’s midfield this summer, but the backline is also an area that requires attention.

Michael Carrick is presently without two of his top defenders, with Matthijs de Ligt sidelined by a long-term injury and Lisandro Martinez also unavailable.

The Argentina international has still not returned to full match sharpness after missing almost the whole of pre-season. His injury history is far from ideal, and his temperament on the pitch has also been questioned.

Harry Maguire started alongside Ayden Heaven in central defence during the away trip to Hull City, and it is fair to say the pair endured a difficult outing at the MKM Stadium.

When that is combined with the former club captain’s ageing legs, Carrick could find himself in a risky position if another defender picks up an injury.

Up to now, INEOS had been focusing on bringing in a left-back as a long-term successor to Luke Shaw, but it appears they have now recognised the issue in central defence as well.

That helps explain reports linking the Red Devils with a versatile full-back who can also operate as a centre-back.

Interestingly, journalist Ben Jacobs has said that the 20-time English league champions were given the opportunity to sign a Chelsea first-team player, while they also admire one of the Blues’ highly-rated youngsters.

A Championship player is also being monitored by United, although it remains unclear whether a deal can be completed before deadline day.

“Manchester United are looking at CB options. Taylor Harwood-Bellis was discussed internally.

“Tosin Adarabioyo was offered directly, as a squad player. Josh Acheampong has been on United’s radar, but Chelsea consider him untouchable in terms of a sale,” the reporter revealed.

Both Chelsea players have been on United’s radar for some time, but it is fair to say Adarabioyo is not considered good enough, while the Stamford Bridge club have previously turned down United’s interest in Acheampong.

The Southampton player would cost around £25 million to £30 million, which is a fee INEOS are unlikely to pay this summer.
