The devastating flood in Trishuli Valley of Nepal has caused huge devastation. The breakage of a large part of the glacier at Langtang Lirung peak resulted in a flood of debris and water, which completely destroyed the villages, bridges and power houses on the way. So far, 750 people have died in this disaster, including Nepal and Tibet, while more than 3,000 people are reported missing. In Nepal alone, 734 bodies have been recovered and 2,498 people are still missing.

Amidst this horrifying scene, an example of humanity and indomitable courage has come to light from Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Nuwakot. Rajendra Dawadi, the 47-year-old principal and English teacher here, with his promptness, brought 1643 children out of the clutches of death.

One phone call and the school was evacuated within minutes

On Wednesday morning, around 9:20 am, studies were going on in the school and 1643 students were present in the campus. Then Principal Dawadi got a call from one of his friends. The friend screamed in panic and said that the river had swallowed the entire village and they should immediately run away from there.

Initially, Dawadi thought that his three-storey concrete school, built at a height of about 60 meters from the river, would be safe. At the same time, the parents of a student arrived in distraught condition and informed that the water was rising very fast.

Realizing the danger, the principal without wasting a moment raised the emergency alarm. All teachers were given strict instructions to vacate the classes. School bus drivers were asked to return safely immediately. Although one bus could not be contacted, it crossed the steel bridge over the river in time. Meanwhile, a girl student, who suffered a panic attack due to nervousness, was immediately sent towards the hill on a motorbike.

School razed to the ground before our eyes, grief of losing two friends

Dawadi himself walked at the back and took all the children safely towards the hill. The students took shelter near a large Bodhi tree. As soon as the children reached safely, the terrible flood of water turned the three-storey school building into debris within a few moments.

The lives of 1643 children were saved, but Dawadi could not save his two colleagues. History teacher Santosh Pariyar, who had gone to his room on the river bank to prepare breakfast, was swept away by the strong current. Operator Sultan Lama, who had gone to shut down the generator room, also fell victim to this disaster.

Devastation caused by iceberg debris spread over 50 acres

According to scientists' analysis, this disaster was caused by the breakage of ice and heavy rocks from Langtang Lirung Peak. This huge debris spread over an area of ​​about 50 acres fell into the narrow valley of the river about 1200 meters below, causing a sudden massive flood in the Trishuli river.

Local people are worshiping Rajendra Dawadi like a god. Looking at the debris of his demolished school, an emotional Dawadi simply says that he had only performed his duty.
