Manchester United vs Ipswich Town: Predicted line-up and team news

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United welcome Ipswich Town to Old Trafford on Sunday as they look to bounce back from a surprise 2-0 defeat to Hull City on the opening day.

United are unbeaten at home against Ipswich in their last eight meetings, and Carrick will hope his players can draw confidence from that record after an irritating start to the season.

Tom Heaton and Manuel Ugarte are still unavailable, with Carrick indicating that Ugarte’s cruciate ligament injury may rule him out for the remainder of the campaign. Carrick has also confirmed that Amad Diallo will not be involved on Sunday.

New arrival Carlos Baleba is unavailable as well, with the head coach explaining that the midfielder has “a little ankle issue” which is expected to keep him out for “a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks,” making it unlikely that he will feature before the international break in late September.

There is more positive news in other areas. Mason Mount has resumed training with the squad after recovering from the foot injury he suffered in pre-season and could have some role on Sunday, while Matthijs de Ligt has also returned to training after undergoing back surgery in May, although it appears too soon for the centre-back to make his first appearance of the season.

Marcus Rashford, who was introduced from the bench against Hull after returning late from World Cup duty, is in contention for his first start. Kobbie Mainoo is also pushing to come into the XI, potentially replacing either Youri Tielemans or Andrey Santos, both of whom found it difficult on their debuts last weekend.

Manchester United possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Mainoo, Santos; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha

The Premier League fixture gets under way at 16:30 BST on Sunday, 30 August 2026.

The game will be shown live in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.
