Matthias Jaissle has described Dan Burn as a ‘natural leader’ after Newcastle United officially confirmed the experienced defender as the club’s new permanent captain for the 2026-27 season.
Newcastle United have announced that Burn will lead the side into the 2026-27 campaign, with the 34-year-old taking over the captain’s armband during a summer of major change at St James’ Park.
Replacing a star heading to Arsenal
Burn succeeds Bruno Guimaraes, who had captained the team over the past two seasons before leaving Newcastle for Arsenal earlier this month. The Brazilian midfielder’s departure left a leadership gap that the club believed needed to be filled by someone with a strong understanding of the squad’s internal culture. Burn is the fourth-highest appearance-maker in the current Newcastle squad and has also earned 11 caps for England, including three appearances at this summer’s FIFA World Cup. The 34-year-old England international, who has supported the Magpies all his life, said the role is an “absolute honour.” The decision represents a major moment for the Blyth-born defender, who has grown into a symbol of the club’s identity since joining from Brighton. “It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special. It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments. I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case,” Burn said.
