Manchester United have been backed to strengthen a defence that has looked vulnerable.

United have already spent heavily during the summer, reshaping their midfield with the arrivals of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and, most recently, Carlos Baleba.

Tielemans and Santos have both played major roles in the early part of the season, but Baleba, who joined with an ankle injury, is still likely to be a few weeks away from making his debut.

The transfer window does not shut until 11pm BST on Tuesday night, and although Carrick said he is satisfied with United’s business so far, he appeared to suggest that more signings could still arrive.

“We’ve done some fantastic business. With the money we’ve spent, we’ve done it very well. So far, we’re happy,” he told Sky Sports after United’s 5-2 win over Ipswich on Sunday.

“You’re always looking for more if you can do something else and make the most of the situation.

“At the moment, the group’s in a good place, and they want to fight for each other, which is important.”

It is still unclear where United may try to add reinforcements in the final hours of the window, but after letting in four goals against newly-promoted teams across their first two Premier League matches, defensive additions could be expected.

They have been linked quite strongly with Newcastle full-back Lewis Hall, though any move does not appear close to being completed.

Luke Shaw, the player Hall would either provide cover for or potentially replace, was at fault for Ipswich’s opening goal on Sunday, but the England international vowed to respond positively: “I’m disappointed in myself for the first goal, someone with that experience I should be doing much better so I take responsibility for that. That’s not me and I was extremely disappointed with myself.”
