New Delhi: Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI has rapidly changed the world of technology, but with it new challenges regarding cyber security are also emerging. In view of this increasing threat, more than 100 technology and cyber security companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft have signed an open letter.

In this letter, the companies have appealed to the governments, private institutions and the tech industry to jointly prepare against AI-based cyber threats and strengthen the security system.

Cyber attacks can increase with the help of AI

The open letter fears that cyber attacks with the help of AI may become more common and more complex in the future. As AI models become more capable, the potential for cyber criminals to misuse these technologies is also increasing.

The biggest concern is that its impact cannot be limited to just tech companies. Hospitals, water treatment plants, internet networks and other critical infrastructure could also be potential targets.

Need to move beyond old cyber defense

Tech companies say that in the era of AI, new methods will be needed for cyber security. For this, emphasis has been laid on increasing cooperation at the local and national level as well as at the international level.

The open letter highlights the need to create new security standards, increase partnerships between companies and governments, and develop new solutions to rapidly changing cyber threats.

Apart from cyber security companies like CrowdStrike, Okta and Fortinet, participation of financial institutions and companies to internet infrastructure has also been reported in this initiative.

Why increased concern about AI agents?

With the rapid development of AI agents, the debate over security has become more serious. Such AI systems are not limited to just answering questions, but they are also being prepared to take decisions on their own in certain circumstances and perform many types of digital tasks.

Some reported incidents have raised the question that if an AI agent is over-authorized or has security gaps, it could unknowingly perform activities that could pose a risk to the organization.

For this reason, the concern of cyber security experts regarding control, permission and monitoring of AI agents is increasing.

Use of AI also against AI

Interestingly, to deal with the threats posed by AI, tech companies themselves are insisting on using AI.

Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft are working on developing systems and programs in which advanced AI models can be used to strengthen cyber defense.

With the help of AI, the ability to identify suspicious activities, analyze threats faster and respond to cyber attacks can be improved.

Security is the biggest challenge in the coming times

Considering the pace of development of AI, cyber security is no longer limited to the security of computers and networks only. The security of AI models, agents and their associated digital systems is becoming equally important.

The simultaneous warning by more than 100 companies is an indication that AI-based cyber threats are no longer seen as a future problem, but as a current security challenge.

The biggest challenge for governments and tech companies in the coming times will be to use the potential of AI for innovation and security, and not to facilitate cyber crime.
