India has increased its imports of LPG and other petroleum products from the US amid continued disruptions to energy movement linked to the Hormuz crisis.
US LPG Imports Surge 254%
According to recently released government data, India’s imports of petroleum products, particularly LPG, from the US rose 254% year-on-year to $2.60 billion in the first quarter of 2026-27.
During the same period, India’s crude oil imports from the US fell 57.5% to $1.57 billion.
LPG Supply Rose Between April And June
The increase in LPG imports took place between April and June, when global energy supplies were being affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Experts said disruptions to supplies from the Gulf region have particularly affected energy flows.
LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas, is a mixture of propane and butane used as cooking fuel. Oil marketing companies often import these two components separately in liquid form.
India’s US Crude Oil Imports Decline
Government data showed that India’s crude oil imports from the US stood at $3.70 billion between April and June 2025. The figure fell to $1.57 billion during the same period in 2026.
According to experts, fluctuations in crude oil imports are driven by the commercial requirements of Indian refineries.
Meanwhile, imports of petroleum products, particularly liquid propane and butane, rose sharply from around $735 million in the first quarter of 2025-26 to $2.60 billion in the first quarter of 2026-27.
