Manchester United’s main priority on transfer deadline day is to sign a new left-back.

Luke Shaw’s injury history, along with his recent dip in form, has made it a clear area that needs immediate reinforcement.

Harry Amass’ expected exit has only strengthened the case for INEOS to bring in a full-back before the summer transfer window closes.

Lewis Hall was the Red Devils’ ideal target, but Newcastle have refused to shift from their position. As things stand, the plan is to revisit a move for the Magpies star next summer.

That has effectively left the 20-time English league champions unwilling to spend heavily this year, and as a result, moves for David Raum and Alejandro Balde have fallen through.

Jorge Salinas is another player being considered by United, with the 19-year-old understood to have a release clause of around £13 million in his present deal.

Atletico Madrid had been leading the race, but a switch to the Metropolitano Stadium has stalled, giving United a small opening.

As per journalist Chris Winterburn, United are now battling the clock in an attempt to strike an initial loan agreement that would include an option to buy.

Given the modest fee being discussed for the Spain Under-19 international, Racing Santander could instead insist on a permanent transfer.

That makes any move even harder to complete, but the Old Trafford club have still not abandoned hope.

“Jorge Salinas is emerging as a loan with an option to buy possibility for Manchester United today,” the reporter wrote.

“Very unlikely this gets done, but the club haven’t totally given up yet. Atletico deal has stalled over last week,” he added.

What makes Jorge Salinas an even more intriguing option is that he can also operate as a centre-back, which is another quality United are looking for.
