FC Barcelona have officially confirmed the signing of Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

The 29-year-old centre-forward joins on a permanent deal and has signed a three-year contract with the La Liga champions, keeping him at the club until 2029.

“Arsenal and FC Barcelona have reached an agreement for the transfer of Gabriel Jesus to the Blaugranes. The Brazilian striker signs on as a culer for three seasons,” the club said in its statement.

Barcelona had been in the market for a new striker throughout the summer after parting company with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

Julian Alvarez was the main target for Hansi Flick and Deco, but Atletico Madrid’s firm refusal to open negotiations for the Argentine meant the Catalan club had to explore other options.

Barcelona then turned to Jesus, who had emerged as a market opportunity, with his Arsenal contract due to expire in 2027.

The Catalan giants have paid €10 million for the 29-year-old forward, with a further €4 million included in variables. Arsenal will also keep a 20% future sell-on clause.

Considering the injury problems he has faced over the past couple of years, Jesus is something of a gamble for Barcelona. However, at that price and with the experience he brings, he could yet prove to be a smart short-term solution for the La Liga champions.
