According to reports, the proposed deal will take Ethan Nwaneri to Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on loan, with no option to buy included in the agreement.

Arsenal, who are aiming to win the Premier League title this season for the first time in the North London club’s history, are prepared to let their 19-year-old talent leave temporarily.

Borussia Dortmund’s interest in Nwaneri goes back to before the signing of Giannis Konstantelias. However, the Arsenal youngster is now expected to get more game time after the Greek attacker recently picked up an injury.

As per transfer expert David Ornstein, the 19-year-old is travelling to Dortmund today to complete his medical.

Konstantelias is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during his first Bundesliga appearance against Hamburger SV, a match in which he also scored his first goal.

Dortmund won that game 2-0, with Konstantelias getting their second goal through an excellent right-footed strike from just inside the penalty area.

After the Greek player’s injury, Dortmund contacted Arsenal and made it clear that signing Nwaneri had become a priority, before the two clubs worked out an arrangement.

Before this increased push from Dortmund, the youngster was reportedly weighing up a loan switch to Fulham, with a preference for staying in the Premier League. That move will now not happen.

The 19-year-old was not included in the squad for the Gunners’ 3-0 pre-season win over Manchester City in the Community Shield, missing out along with Gabriel Martinelli.

The Brazilian has since moved to Saudi Arabia, while Nwaneri is now heading towards the Bundesliga, with Mikel Arteta’s side hoping the teenager can continue his development at Dortmund.

The youngster spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at Marseille in Ligue 1, where he scored two goals and provided one assist in nine appearances in the French top flight.

Nwaneri also found the net against Dortmund for Arsenal in pre-season, in a 3-2 defeat in the Emirates Cup, and he also scored his penalty in the shootout that followed.

Since becoming the North London club’s youngest Premier League debutant in 2022 at the age of just 15, Nwaneri has been unable to establish himself in a team that has challenged for the English top-flight title in four consecutive seasons.

He has played 51 matches for Arsenal, scoring 10 goals and registering two assists, with Mikel Arteta admitting in August that he wanted the 19-year-old to remain at the club, while also stressing that he needs more opportunities.

Arsenal were reportedly considering whether selling the youngster permanently would be the better option, but a loan move has now been agreed. If Nwaneri makes the most of the opportunities that come his way at Dortmund, either a permanent transfer or a place in Arsenal’s first team could still be open to him when he returns to London.
