Green pea cultivation in winter

As the winter season approaches, the demand for green peas increases rapidly. Fresh green peas enhance the taste of peas-paneer, pulao, kachori and parathas. If you want to enjoy your home grown fresh peas instead of market peas, it can be easily grown in the kitchen garden on the terrace or balcony.

Pea cultivation does not require much space. By providing the right pot, good soil, adequate sunlight and proper support to the plants, you can get a good crop at home.

Right time to sow seeds in October-November

Green peas grow well in cool climates, so it is best to sow their seeds between October and November. First of all, prepare the soil thoroughly.

For this, a light and friable mixture can be prepared by mixing about 50% normal garden soil, 30% rotten cow dung manure and 20% sand. If available, vermicompost can also be added to it.

Pea roots do not go deep, so a pot or grow-bag about 9 to 12 inches deep and wide will suffice. It is necessary to have a drainage hole in the pot to drain the water.

Preparation before sowing seeds

Soaking the seeds in lukewarm water for about 6 to 8 hours before sowing can help in germination. Next, sow the seeds about 1 to 1.5 inches deep and keep a distance of 2 to 3 inches between each seed.

After covering the seeds with soil, water lightly with a spray bottle. Maintain moisture in the soil, but do not allow waterlogging. Under normal conditions, seedlings begin to appear in about 5 to 7 days.

Necessary to support the vine

The pea plant grows in the form of a vine. When the plants reach about 6 to 8 inches high, it becomes necessary to support them.

For this, a small scaffold can be made in the pot with the help of thin bamboo sticks, wooden sticks or rope. Providing support to the vine helps the plant to spread and adequate amount of sunlight and air is also available.

Requires 5-6 hours of sunlight daily

Pea plants should be kept in such a place where they can get good sunlight for about 5 to 6 hours daily. Providing adequate light helps in plant growth and development of pods.

While irrigating, keep in mind that the soil should remain slightly moist. Excessive watering can cause water to accumulate in the roots and damage the plant.

care after flowering

When the plants start flowering, organic fertilizer or vermicompost can be given from time to time. A light spray of neem oil can also be used to protect against pests, but use any organic or chemical product only according to the instructions on its label.

Pea crop ready in 60-75 days

Given the right weather and care, pea pods can be ready in about 60 to 75 days after sowing. When the pods appear plump and well-packed, carefully pluck them from the plant.

Thus, fresh green peas can be grown at home in a small space with the help of a pot or grow-bag. With this, the kitchen garden will also remain green and one can enjoy the taste of fresh home-grown peas in winters.
