Manchester United can make it two wins from their first three matches of the season when they visit Everton on Sunday.

Michael Carrick’s men are 10th in the table after bouncing back from an opening-day loss at Hull City with a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town. Sunday’s fixture will be the 20th Premier League match of Carrick’s second spell in charge of United, and across that period no team has collected more points (42) than the Red Devils.

A win would move him on to 45 points from those 20 matches, a return achieved by only four other managers in the competition’s history: Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte at Chelsea, John Gregory at Aston Villa, and Arne Slot at Liverpool.

Carlos Baleba, United’s summer arrival, is still out with an ankle injury and is expected to remain sidelined for a couple more weeks, while Manuel Ugarte (knee) and Amad Diallo (ankle) are also long-term absentees. There is more encouraging news regarding Luke Shaw and Mason Mount, with both players back in full training and available for selection. Carrick personally confirmed Mount’s comeback: “Mase is back around the group, which was great. Trained this week, so that’s a big positive for us.”

Bruno Fernandes, who struck a hat-trick against Ipswich to take his tally for the season to three goals — more than any other player in the division so far this campaign — is expected to continue in the role behind Matheus Cunha, while Marcus Rashford and Bryan Mbeumo are likely to complete the front line.
