Real Betis playmaker Isco on Tuesday night carved out a place for himself in European football history. The milestone came through his appearance for the Verdiblancos in continental competition.

Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis had just got their UEFA Champions League campaign back under way with a League Phase fixture against French side Lille.

After an impressive La Liga win over Real Madrid at the weekend, Pellegrini and his coaching staff kept faith with most of the same starting XI for the trip to Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

That meant Isco retained his place in midfield.

And, as mentioned above, that alone saw the 34-year-old write his name even deeper into the record books of European club football.

As statistician MisterChip revealed:

“Isco becomes the FIRST player to play in the Champions League with FIVE different clubs from the same country.”

The five clubs involved are Valencia, Malaga, Real Madrid, Sevilla and now Real Betis.
