Real Madrid were under heavy pressure in the opening phase of their Champions League meeting with Inter, but with a player like Kylian Mbappé in the side, they were always capable of finding a way back.

In José Mourinho's first European match since returning as Real Madrid manager, his team found it difficult against his former club, now led by his ex-player Cristian Chivu.

Thibaut Courtois had to make a number of important interventions, yet Inter failed to convert their chances and paid the price in the 14th minute, with the mistake entirely of their own making.

Former Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones played a poor square pass towards Yann Bisseck, who was dispossessed by Brahim Díaz. Díaz then slipped the ball through to Mbappé, and the French forward finished calmly beyond Josep Martínez.

Before kick-off, Mbappé had collected his award for being the top scorer in last season's competition with 15 goals, receiving it from Luis Figo. That latest goal also took him level with another Real Madrid great, former club captain Raúl.

Inter hurt themselves once more before the half-hour mark when Martínez tried a Cruyff turn inside his own penalty area, only for Federico Valverde to nick the ball away from him and send it into the net.

It was shaping up to be a dream evening for the Special One.
