What happens if luggage exceeds the free limit?
If your luggage exceeds the free limit but remains within the maximum compartment limit, you may keep it with you instead of sending it to the train's brake van. To do this, you must book the excess luggage in advance at the station by paying 1.5 times the 'Scale-L' rates.
However, if your luggage exceeds the maximum compartment capacity, it will strictly not be permitted inside the train coach (compartment). Such heavy luggage must be booked specifically for transport via the brake van.
What is the penalty for carrying excess luggage without booking?
If you are found carrying unbooked or partially booked excess luggage during your journey or during a check at the station, the Railways may levy a penalty.
6x Penalty: A charge of up to six times the applicable luggage scale rate may be imposed on unbooked excess luggage.
Minimum Charge: According to the commercial manual, a minimum charge of ₹50 applies in certain cases.
Please note: This penalty is not six times the cost of your ticket; rather, it is calculated based on the excess weight, distance, and luggage rates.
What are the size limits for bags or suitcases?
The Railways is strict not only about weight but also about the dimensions of the luggage:
Size Limits: If the size of your trunk, suitcase, or box exceeds the prescribed limit, it will not be permitted inside the coach and must be sent via the brake van.
AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car: The maximum size for bags or suitcases in these classes is 55 cm × 45 cm × 22.5 cm.
Restriction on Commercial Goods: Carrying commercial goods (merchandise) with you inside the coach is strictly prohibited. For commercial goods, you should utilize the station's luggage or parcel office prior to your journey.
