If kept for a long time, a black or cloudy layer may develop on copper utensils. This is commonly called rust, but this layer formed on copper is mostly oxidation i.e. tarnish. An attempt can be made to clean it with some common things present in the house.

Shine copper with lemon and salt

Lemon and salt can be used to remove light tarnish from copper. The acidic nature of lemon and salt can help in loosening the layer on the surface.

Do the cleaning like this:

• First of all, cut the lemon into two parts.
• Apply some salt on the cut lemon.
• Now rub it lightly on the dull surface of a copper plate or pot.
• Avoid applying too much force, especially on utensils with designs.
• After cleaning, wash the utensils thoroughly with clean water.
• Finally, wipe it immediately with a soft dry cloth and dry it completely.

Salt and White Vinegar on Excessive Tarnish

If black layer is more visible on the vessel then salt and white vinegar can be used. Prepare a light paste by mixing both and apply it on the utensil with the help of a soft cloth. After rubbing lightly for some time, wash the utensil thoroughly with water. After this, it is important to wipe it immediately with a dry cloth, so that there is no moisture left on the surface.

If you don't have lemon and vinegar, try tamarind.

Tamarind is also used in many homes to clean copper utensils. For this, tamarind pulp can be taken out and applied lightly on the surface of the vessel. After this, wash the utensil thoroughly with water and dry it with a soft cloth. However, it is not necessary that tamarind has the same effect on every type of copper vessel. Therefore, it would be better to try it on a small part first.

Do not make this mistake while cleaning copper utensils

Copper is a relatively soft metal, so avoid using steel wool, very rough scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners when cleaning. Rubbing too hard may scratch the surface of the utensil. Take extra care especially while cleaning old, carved or designed puja utensils.

Before installing Bappa, first of all clean the copper plate, pot and kalash with soap or water in the usual manner. After this, remove the tarnish by adopting mild home remedies as per requirement. After cleaning is complete, wash the utensil thoroughly with clean water and dry it immediately with a soft cloth. Keep in mind that the same method is not necessarily safe or effective for every copper vessel. Therefore, before adopting any home remedy, it is better to keep in mind the surface and finish of the vessel.
