Apple Wallet and Apple Pay are not the same thing. Wallet stores cards, tickets, and passes, whereas Apple Pay is used for secure digital payments.

Apple iPhones come with several features that often confuse users regarding their names and functions; Apple Wallet and Apple Pay are among them. Many people believe they are the same, but that is not the case. While they are interconnected, they serve different purposes. If you use an iPhone, it is important to understand the distinction between the two.

Let’s start with Apple Wallet. You can think of it as a digital wallet on your iPhone where you can securely store various types of digital cards and passes. In addition to credit and debit cards, the Wallet can store boarding passes, tickets, loyalty cards, event passes, and other digital passes. Essentially, its primary function is to manage your essential cards and passes in one place. For instance, if an airline boarding pass is saved in the Wallet, it can be easily accessed when needed. Similarly, cards stored in the Wallet can be used for transactions at locations that support the service.

Apple Pay is a payment service that allows users to make payments using their Apple devices at supported locations. To use it, you link your bank card to Apple Pay, enabling you to make payments wherever Apple Pay is accepted.

Cards linked to Apple Pay on an iPhone typically appear within the Wallet app, which is why confusion arises between the two. Simply put, the Wallet is where the card resides, while Apple Pay provides the facility to make payments using that card.

It is worth noting that the availability of Apple Pay varies by country and region. In India, iPhone users can store various digital passes and other supported items in Apple Wallet; however, the standard card-based Apple Pay feature is not available in India in the same way it is in the US and certain other countries. That is why users in India should not assume, simply by seeing the 'Wallet' app, that they can make payments via Apple Pay using cards from any bank.

Confusing Apple Wallet with Apple Pay is a major mistake. Wallet is a digital space or app, whereas Apple Pay is a payment service. While they work together, they serve different purposes. The easiest way to understand the distinction is that items are stored in the Wallet, while Apple Pay is used to make payments under supported conditions. So, there is no need to get confused the next time you see both these names on your iPhone.
