India's iPhone Paradox: How A Lower-Middle-Income Economy Became A Premium Market For Apple
GH News September 11, 2026 02:08 PM

India’s iPhone boom reflects more than rising incomes. Apple is targeting a sizeable affluent & aspirational consumer base, while EMIs, credit cards & digital payments make expensive devices more accessible. As premium smartphone sales grow beyond metros, India’s income inequality, consumer aspirations & expanding financing ecosystem are turning the country into a major premium market for Apple.

At first glance, Apple’s premium pricing in India appears difficult to justify. The country’s annual per capita income is around $2,813 (approximately ₹2.33 lakh), while the iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900. Apple’s folding flagship, the iPhone Duo, costs as much as ₹4,49,900, almost twice the average Indian’s annual income.

Yet Apple continues to treat India as one of its most promising markets. The apparent contradiction becomes easier to understand when income distribution, consumer aspirations and access to credit are taken into account.

India’s Affluent Consumer Base Changes The Equation

India’s consumer market is far from uniform. Alongside a large population with limited purchasing power is a sizeable affluent segment whose spending patterns are significantly closer to those seen in developed economies. Between these groups lies an expanding middle and upper-middle class that increasingly spends on premium products.
