A familiar figure has taken centre stage in Bayern Munich’s newest UEFA Champions League push.

Vincent Kompany’s team finally made the breakthrough two minutes into the second half of their opening league-phase match against Bodo/Glimt, with Jamal Musiala finding the net.

The Germany international struck brilliantly on the turn, and in doing so wrote his name into the Bundesliga club’s history by scoring Bayern’s 900th goal in European competitions.

As if that achievement was not significant enough, Musiala’s opener also signalled a highly encouraging personal comeback after several health concerns during Bayern’s pre-season schedule.

He collapsed twice within four days while featuring in friendlies against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim, with the issue diagnosed as a short-term ‘neurological dysfunction’.

The 23-year-old’s condition led to temporary but treatable seizures, something Bayern had been aware of last season and later linked to a recent change in his medication.

After recovering, he has been brought back gradually, and he could hardly have picked a better occasion — or a better milestone — to underline his return to top form.
