EPFO has introduced a feature on the UMANG app to generate and activate a new UAN using Aadhaar face authentication. Now, you can download your PF passbook and track claim status directly from your mobile.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has significantly expanded its digital services for the convenience of its millions of account holders. According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, a new Universal Account Number (UAN) can now be generated, activated, and authenticated on the government’s mobile platform, the ‘UMANG’ app, using Aadhaar face authentication technology. Thanks to this modern facial recognition system and OTP verification, PF account holders will no longer need to deal with paperwork or make repeated visits to offices. Furthermore, once the UAN is activated, users can avail themselves of five key services—such as downloading the PF passbook, checking the balance, viewing online claim status, and updating KYC—directly from their smartphones, all from the comfort of their homes.
How to Generate and Activate a New UAN Without Paperwork Hassles
Employees who do not yet have a UAN can easily obtain a new number by visiting the ‘UAN Allotment and Activation’ section of the UMANG app. To do this, the user must provide their identification number and registered mobile number, along with their consent. Following this, after entering the OTP received on the phone, a facial scan is performed using the ‘Aadhaar Face RD’ app. Once the biometric identity is successfully verified, the new UAN is generated and sent to the mobile via SMS. If a UAN already exists for the user, the system automatically notifies them.

How to Activate and Authenticate an Existing UAN
If you already have a UAN but it is not activated, select the ‘UAN Activation’ option on the UMANG app. Enter your UAN, Aadhaar, and mobile number, followed by the OTP. The account will be activated immediately upon the completion of the UIDAI API-based face scan process. After successful authentication, the user receives a temporary password via SMS. Additionally, the employee’s latest photograph and address are automatically updated in the EPFO database. Users with already activated accounts can also easily update their EPF records using this face authentication feature.
Access PF balance, passbook, and claim status facilities in a single app
Once UAN activation and verification are complete, the UMANG app unlocks EPFO’s comprehensive digital library. Employees can then check their total PF account balance and download their complete e-passbook at any time. Furthermore, if a member has applied for a PF advance or final withdrawal, the live tracking status of the claim is clearly visible on the app. Updating KYC credentials has also become significantly simpler and more secure.
