Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have experienced an unusually calm start to pre-orders, with most configurations still showing launch-day availability shortly after orders opened. The slower-than-usual demand could signal changing consumer priorities as Apple prepares to launch its first foldable iPhone Duo.

iPhone 18 Pro Does Not Sell Out Immediately

Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup opened on September 12, ahead of the September 18 retail launch.

Unlike previous iPhone Pro launches, Apple’s website did not immediately show significant shipping delays. AppleInsider reported that roughly half an hour after pre-orders opened, no iPhone 18 Pro colour or configuration in the US had slipped beyond the September 18 delivery date.

That is unusual for Apple’s premium iPhone launches, where popular configurations can quickly move to later delivery dates.

Better Supply Could Be One Reason

The slow initial movement does not necessarily mean consumers are rejecting the iPhone 18 Pro.

One possible explanation is that Apple may simply have more launch inventory available this year. If supply is significantly higher than in previous years, shipping dates would remain stable even with strong demand.

Apple also changed the pre-order experience this year by introducing a queue system and allowing customers to prepare their configurations and payment details before orders opened.

iPhone Duo Could Be Holding Buyers Back

Another major factor could be Apple’s upcoming iPhone Duoits first foldable iPhone.

The Duo was unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup but will not be available for pre-order until October 16with sales beginning October 23.

Some customers may therefore be postponing an expensive iPhone upgrade to see whether the foldable model offers a more compelling alternative.

The possibility of a new form factor could particularly affect consumers who would otherwise have purchased the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Economic Conditions May Also Matter

This suggests that inventory is beginning to tighten as orders accumulate.

The early data therefore may indicate a slower start rather than weak overall sales.

Too Early to Call It a Flop

The iPhone 18 Pro’s initial pre-order performance should be interpreted cautiously. Delivery delays depend on both supply and demand, and Apple’s initial inventory levels are unknown.

The upcoming iPhone Duo also makes this year’s launch unusual. Some customers may simply be waiting for October before deciding which premium iPhone to buy.
