ChatGPT Privacy Risks: These days 80s photo trend is being liked a lot on social media. People are turning their normal photos into retro and cinematic ones with the help of ChatGPT. Pictures with big hairstyles, vintage clothes, film-like effect and studio lighting are becoming increasingly viral.

While it can be fun to have AI edit photos, it’s important to understand some important privacy issues before uploading your photos to an AI tool. Even a simple selfie can contain many clues about your identity and personal information.

What information is at risk when uploading photos?

Apart from the face visible in the picture, the environment behind it can also give a lot of information. For example, house number, street name, vehicle number plate, office, college or identities of other people present nearby can be recorded in the photo.

Additionally, metadata may be present in the original file of the photo. This may include information such as when the photo was taken, what device it was used on, and in some circumstances, location. Therefore, before uploading any photo, it is important to view it carefully.

How does photo privacy work on ChatGPT?

When you upload a photo to ChatGPT, it becomes part of your conversation. How it is used depends on your ChatGPT account, type of service, and associated data controls.

User interactions and uploaded content may be used to improve the model as per settings available in the Consumer account. However, this does not mean that every uploaded image is automatically used to train the model.

At the same time, data from Business Products and APIs are not used for model training by default as per OpenAI policies. Therefore, before uploading a photo, it is better to check the Privacy and Data Controls of your account.

Is it safe to upload selfies to ChatGPT?

Uploading a simple selfie to a reputable AI service may not in itself be considered dangerous in every situation. But it must be understood that when you upload a photo, a copy of it reaches the concerned service outside your device.

If you do not want new conversations to be used to refine the model, you can make the necessary changes by checking the options available in ChatGPT’s Data Controls setting.

How to change settings in Data Controls (ChatGPT Privacy Risks)

These are the general steps you can take to view Data Controls settings in ChatGPT:

  • Open the ChatGPT app or website.
