State level flood mock exercise organized on World Drowning Prevention Day

People were made aware of the procedures of search and rescue, medical camp management, relief camp for protection and safety from flood disaster – District Magistrate

Bhadohi – On the occasion of World Drowning Prevention Day on 25th July, a state level flood mock exercise was organized at Sitamarhi Ghat for protection and safety from flood disaster in the presence and supervision of Chairman District Disaster Management/District Magistrate Vishal Singh. During this, a large number of villagers and residents of the area were made aware about flood prevention.

World Drowning Prevention Day is a global event to remember the lives lost due to drowning and to raise awareness about safety in and around water. The purpose of the day is to identify the causes of drowning deaths during floods, mock exercises and to raise awareness about safety measures to prevent them.

The human, social and economic loss caused by drowning is unbearable but it is completely preventable. The risk of drowning can be significantly reduced by implementing evidence-based, cost-effective strategies to prevent drowning incidents. During the mock rehearsal, the audience was trained on safe rescue and resuscitation techniques such as CPR and mouth-to-mouth breathing.

The District Magistrate praised the work of the boatmen and divers present there and praised them as Jal Jeevan Raksha Mitras and said that you people, as a vigilant water guard, remain available 24 hours a day at the local level and save the lives of people drowning and trapped in floods. This is a very humane, ethical and fulfilling act.

Officer-in-Charge/Additional District Magistrate (V/R) Kunwar Virendra Maurya, during the mock exercise, under search and rescue, observed the action of rescue teams wearing life rings and life jackets to rescue people trapped in floods in Sitamarhi area and also to save drowning people. Under the management of the medical camp, people trapped in floods were safely rescued and brought for medical treatment on stretchers and provided first aid. People brought safely were given shelter in a relief camp. People were made aware there by providing them proper food, water and accommodation facilities.

Nodal Officer Mock Exercise 2024/Additional Superintendent of Police Dr. Tejveer Singh told that for the prevention and protection from flood disaster, all the units to the police department showed the practice of coordination and cooperation of search and rescue, crowd management, water police etc. Along with this, emphasis was laid on safe boats and skipping rules along with wearing and proper maintenance of life jackets.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Santosh Kumar Chak informed that keeping in view the prevention of drowning incidents, an emergency life support team and kit has been prepared. Drowning people are taken out and given immediate CPR or mouth-to-mouth breathing for safe rescue and resuscitation. District Supply Officer Sunil informed at the stall set up by the Food and Supplies Department that basic food items and essential items such as candles, matches, bread, naman, lai, gram, jaggery etc. are provided free of cost to the people trapped during the flood disaster.

Disaster expert Ankit Singh said that during the flood mock exercise, the rescue operations being carried out during drowning incidents, mainly first aid and CPR, were shown to the audience. Also, by providing basic facilities to them by taking them to the flood relief camp, food and essential items kits of the Food and Logistics Department were provided.

During the mock exercise, Deputy District Magistrate Gyanpur Arun Giri, Police Circle Officer Prabhat Rai, District Panchayati Raj Officer Sanjay Mishra, District Development Officer Gyan Prakash, Deputy Director Agriculture Dr. Ashwani Singh, District Information Officer Dr. Pankaj Kumar, Tehsildar Ajay Singh, Sanjay Kumar, Irrigation and Canal Engineer, Additional Chief Officer, Water Corporation Engineer, etc. made the public aware of the flood relief and rescue works and responsibilities to their department.
