San Francisco Unicorns beat Texas Super Kings in the Major League Cricket 2024 Challenger on July 26 to reach the finals. Unicorns were asked to bat first and put up a challenging 200 on the board as Fin Allen dazzled with 101 off just 53. Devon Conway and Faf du Plessis were cruising toward the target before Corey Anderson showed his sheer athleticism to dismiss the South African in the fifth over.

Texas had amassed 55 runs in 4.1 overs as Carmi le Roux delivered a back-of-a-length delivery that angled across Du Plessis and was bit wide. The Texas skipper tried to reach out to the ball and toed it towards mid-off. On any other day, the ball would have sailed over the fielder, but Anderson judged, waited, jumped at the right time, and stretched his left hand to grab a stunner.

“It was moments like that which will help us going further (on his one-handed catch), Faf has been playing well right through the tournament, so that catch helped us to stall some of the momentum away from them,” said Anderson after the game.

It was important to break the match in the powerplay: Faf

The former South Africa captain walked back after scoring 45 off 22, while Conway (62* off 38) remained unbeaten. But no other Texas batter chipped in with a valuable onslaught in the middle, and the required run rate kept raking up. Joshua Tromp played a sublime knock of an unbeaten 56* off 36, but that proved to be just not enough as San Francisco clinched the victory by 10 runs.

“I thought 185 was a par score here, we started off well (with the bat), it was important to break the match in the powerplay, but we lost quick wickets in the middle-overs, we did show a lot of fight in the back-end, but left too much in the end,” said Du Plessis after the game.
