Ingredients for making chocolate modak

  • Mawa (khoya): The base of this recipe. You can make it at home, but it takes quite a while.
  • Cocoa powder: Adds the chocolate flavour.
  • Sugar: Sweetens the modaks.
  • Ghee (optional): Helps prevent the mixture from sticking.

Method for making chocolate modak

  • Heat 1 teaspoon of ghee in a pan over medium heat. Add the mawa and sauté for 2 minutes.
  • Mix in the sugar, which will melt quickly. Reduce the heat to low.
  • Stir continuously as the mixture cooks on low heat. After about 5 minutes, it will begin to bubble.
  • Sift in the cocoa powder and, if desired, add a sprinkle of cardamom powder. Combine thoroughly.
  • Continue cooking on low heat until the mixture starts to pull away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball when rolled. Avoid over-cooking to prevent a chewy texture.
